Government Inquiries

The NSW Government has announced an inquiry into improving the planing system and has requested public comment. The address to send submissions is given as "Planning Reform".

An SOS member has written to this address as follows:

Dear Sir/Madam, Another point I should have made is my strong objection to your use of the term “reform” when you are putting proposed changes out for public comment on whether they will make things better or worse. By using the term “reform” you are saying the changes will definitely make things better, which implies that you are not going to be paying genuine attention to any public opinions that they will make things worse.

Could you please correct that misuse of English language by changing all your headings to ‘planning changes’?

Please let me know ASAP that you are doing that; and if not, why.

The NSW Dept of Planning, the bureaucrats behind this "reform",have a long history of manipulating the English language and the facts,as in their use of the term "reform".For starters,in the past 8 years, the Departmental name has changed from DUAP ( Department of Urban Affairs and Planning ),and for which term some wags coined meanings that can't be mentioned here,to PlanningNSW (grammar is not their strong point ),to DIPNR, and now to NSW Dept of Planning. The names have been changed ,not to protect the innocent, but the guilty, much the same as DOCS will undoubtedly changed its name after the many recent stuff-ups.In 2004 the Dept duped former Assistant Planning Minister Di Beamer into actually redefining the English language-namely changing the definitions of medium density to mean low density and high density to mean medium density. These changes were quickly seen to be an Orwellian-like manipulation of the truth in true 1984 manner. In their efforts to push their high density agenda (using the Orwellian terms "Smart Growth" or "Urban Consolidation" ),these zealots will stop at nothing to achieve their aims.Their Smart Growth theory, and that's all it is,is being shot down daily by the facts on increasing air pollution, more car use, lower sustainability, disapproving public opinion etc etc.A classic Orwellian tactic from the Dept was the recent SEPP 5 legislation, ostensably a scheme for housing of the handicapped and elderly, but which in fact turned out to be a plan to build more high rise units where locals didn't want them. The Dept wouldn't have any statistics to show how many handicapped and elderly,if any, were housed under this scheme.More Newspeak from the Government of Oceania, aka the NSW State Labor government and the Dept of Planning bureaucrats.Of course, close connections between these same bureaucrats, the high rise development industry, and the millions in donations to the Labor and Liberal parties have no influence on their undemocratic high rise policies, policies supported by the very same Labor and Liberal parties and which an overwhelming number of Australians have shown they don't want ( see Australian Bureau of Statistis 2004 )
